I don't think its dirt, but I sure don't trust it going into the same pot as the Phals I grow.

The real question I might ask is, how did it survive 'til clearance time at Walmart? And THRIVE, even. It has as many healthy roots as any I've seen. And more than most.

I don't know about "thrive". Orchids have a delayed reaction to their environmental stimuli. They do not behave on our time frame. It's difficult to say whether it really is thriving or not unless they're grown long term, (> 1 yr).

Isn't it safe to assume this orchid has been growing in this pot (and medium) for quite some time? Or are you speaking in reference to Walmart's care?

How adorable is the above query? Off the chain adorable.
Thanks for making me .
I have no clue, but were it actual soil, would that plant be as healthy as it clearly is? Nevah. Maybe it's some beyond belief broken down proper medium or something NEW. I have no clue, but boy, I too now, would like to know!
Keep chasing the data.....but first, get that puppy outta that stuff!

I do see the wood chips. Its the small pieces that look troublesome.
It probably is broken down wood chips.

How does it get so broken down?
Before I repot, I have to make up my mind what to pot in. My 'coarse bark' is too coarse for me to feel comfortable with.
Also, it may need a bigger pot. I havent decided whether or not I should bury the aerial roots.

I also dont want to put it in something too different than what it is in. I dont want to lose roots. They are, at least, used to the medium they are in. Before I determine what is similar, I have to determine WHAT it is actually in.
