It all depends on the drainage & if you can keep it from sitting in standing water. My dends, catts, cimbidiums, and phals and misc orchids have been in full rainstorms where it rains for an hour long. I have watered 3 times a day as well. ---about the roots drying. They have a lifespan. Keeping them moist will only mess up their ability to exchange gasses. They need to be able to dry out. Also, when you repot there will be a retarding of growth. I want to repot during a time that there is no growth. I do not see the logic of potting when growth is active. You do the operation when the patient is sleeping, not when she is waking up. That's just me.
Also light. Overcast is still light. Sunlight is made of many spectrums. You can still get a sunburn when it is overcast. People in British Columbia, and Washington State seem to do very well with ochids, and it is overcast there much of the time.
