Default visiting ireland, can I bring home orchids?

hello, I am currently visiting ireland. I went to the Bloom festival and seen a dendrobium I liked but ended up not getting since I wasnt sure if I would be able to bring it back home on the plane with me to the u.s. Can anyone let me know if I can bring any orchids I find at the stores in ireland, home to michigan, united states? And if i can, what stores usualy have other kinds from phals. i have tried a few times to search online about the limits to bring plants from other countries but didnt really understand what i did find.

thanks in advance

If you are asking, you don't have the proper documents.

Ireland probably has an indigenous specie or two but isn't known to be an orchid haven. You are likely seeing plants native to other places.

Orchids native to Ireland are usually in the genus Dactylorhiza. There might be an Orchis or two, maybe some Anacamptis. Perhaps maybe even some Epipactis or some Cephalanthera, (not sure about these two). I think some Cypripediums are native to Ireland too.

You would need an import permit and CITES and phytosanitary papers. Not worth it if you're gonna get a Dendrobium.

Dendrobiums are native to the continent of Asia.

Unless you are knowledgeable in the skill of growing terrestrial orchids, (which the above mentioned genera in the first paragraph are), you are better off getting your Dendrobiums here in the States.

There are many orchid nurseries that sell online.

Do you know what kind of Dendrobium you were looking at? Did you get the name from a plant tag?

Private travellers are allowed to bring in up to 12 plants without an import permit, BUT:

You need phytosanitary certificate
Plants can't be on CITES restricted list
Each plant must be individually labelled
All potting material must be removed, and plants must be 100% free of bugs
If you enter thru air port without inspection service, you must pay for bonded courier to take plants to inspection station
You must also pay for shipment from inspection station to your residence

Good luck

I loked into this a while back. I usually travel through Newark AP, which is very close to Linden inpection station, so I thought I could manage. However, the Phytosanitary certificate cannot be obtained without prior arrangements, and most nutseries charge 50-75 Euros for it.

Also, when I went to the nursery I had in mind, I discovered that many of their plants were mis-labelled. At that point I dropped the idea.

I'm not exactly sure where you're located Michigan, but when you get back into the country, we have Taylor Orchids and Porter's Orchids if you're looking to visit an orchid greenhouse. There's also Larry's Orchids and Tropicals retail store if you're near the southeast.

There are also a number of orchid societies all over Michigan. All of the societies hold shows that have vendors that sell plants other than phals. If you're near Birmingham or Lansing, the Michigan Orchid Society and The Greater Lansing Orchid Society will both have Marni Turkel as a speaker in September. That would be a great opportunity to buy some uncommon orchids and meet other people interested in orchids, if you're within driving distance of either location.

I hope this helps. Have fun in Ireland!
