Yes kiddies. It time for another informative potting tutorial from that old bastar....er.....old fart James.
This is another phal I picked up out of a trash can (
) and wanted to share the experience. Don't worry. I washed my hands before typing this. This phal had both nice fresh roots and old tired mushy roots. It was planted in sphagnum moss (when aren't they planted in this junk?). Well I started in the usual way, at the bottom center of the root mass using tweezers. S...l...o...w...l...y I started pulling out small wads of it, working my way up and out. As usual there was the initial round plug of dense old sphagnum moss in the center. No roots penetrate this old plug. Actually there was a very small second plug which was too difficult to photograph. (And the audience lets out a collective sigh of relief). I cleaned up the roots noting how there were lots of roots on the outside but none on the inside because the initial yearling is placed on the top of this central plug of sphagnum moss and the roots grow out and then down along the sides of this small initial plug. (
) Then when it has grown a second pair of leaves it is placed in the pot you purchased it in and more (eek!!!) sphagnum moss is pounded down into the pot around the outside of this initial plug of moss. After thoroughly cleaning off all the old moss I put it in a small pot and repotted into expanded clay pellets. I just want to see how well the plant grows in the ECP. Hey!!! Wake up!!!! OK. There ya have it. Another how-to tutorial on big box phals and how to repot them correctly. I'll keep you posted. Byeee.
