Gosh all, I have learnt so much from this thread! I am hopeless with Cymbidiums. Have one which I just moved to a full sunlight condition after reading this and pumped with lots of fertiliser. Wish me well.

OK one question, semi terrestrial in nature? So should I repot them? Mine are currently in a mix of dry bark/rock, basically very dry medium. Semi terrestrial suggests some soil/peat/moss is required...

Most Cyms do fine in bark mix - keep media from drying completely.

Yes, small pots need to be watered more often than big ones.

Thanks WhiteRabbit. I know that sounded like a stupid question but i m so afraid of overwatering! But if they are varieties that like to be moist i wanted to feel safer.

Ajeatoo, your bark is too big for a Cym and the roots are simply not getting enough water to the green bulbs. If you did not reduce the root mass, the larger size bark will not have gotten inside the root ball and the roots will not have contact with it. It also appears to be planted a bit high in the pot. The bottom 1/4 of the bulbs should be in the mix. The roots you see dying are those on the top which are holding no water as they are constantly exposed to the air.

You say you used a seaweed solution on the plants? In my experience, this will leave a residue which can filter into the top of the mix.

Hi, yes it's what I figured. I have ordered cymbidium mix which has some pest moss etc from repotme.com just waiting for it to arrive, was hoping it would come today but I don't think I'll get it until next week. It's a much finer mix with some small bark also. As for the height I have moved the bark around a bit to check the roots so it was a little deeper but I will make sure to pot it deeper as your suggest, I didn't realize it could be that deep.
As for the roots I have seen on some videos that people have cut off the bottom inch or two of roots, should I do that when I repot?
The mix it is in does have some fine tiny gravel like substance that I carefully put around the roots and that has stayed fairly moist so it isn't sitting completely dry however the mix is totally wrong I agree. I just wish the new mix would arrive already!! Maybe I will get a parcel card later today fingers crossed and I can repot tomorrow.

Did you send for the Cymbidium Repotting Guide from goldcoastcymgrowers@gmail.com? That should answer a lot of your questions.

I just hate to see you keep fussing with this plant. It needs to get settled and get to growing!

Yes I did receive it. I actually haven't touched the cym in well over two weeks. I just watered today a little bit for the first time during this period also. So I don't think I'm fussing with it. I'll repot into proper mix when it arrives but otherwise I will and have left it alone.
