Needed to get a Phal...but the buds...
Default Needed to get a Phal...but the buds...

Just had to have one.
Went to Home Depot and it looked like a stampede had passed through! OMG! Those poor orchids! All broken pots shattered!

So at the clearance rack I found the usual motley assortment of waterlogged Phals, chose 2 and an Oncidium, no further name, hoping it's a fragrant Golden Urchin, but I'll take whatever comes. Also my daughter spotted 2 teeny little 2 inchers called 'Equitant Orchids' Got those also.

Then we went to Sam's but no orchids. Then at the checkout line, lo and behold, there, on a for sale table was a lonely Phal, being used as decor. Walked up to it and it was dry as a bone! Good sized buds but they seemed to have not opened because of the neglect. This was it! This was my Phal! Paid full price and baby-ed it all the way home .

Now it's resting comfortably in new medium, new box, (roots weren't too, too bad) in my 'Orchid Intensive Care Unit'

Ya think at least, maybe a couple of the buds will/may still open? Or is this what is called 'bud blast'?

Thanks guys!

Kind of hard to tell from the pic, but they seem to look ok. If they start to turn an orangey/yellow all the way back to the spike then you will probably lose them.

wish we had equitant oncidiums in our HD...they usually only have phals...and rarely on clearance.

Ironic you got an Equitant orchid. They are endemic to your part of the world. They are also known as Tolumnia. I saw these orchids growing outside in a croton hedge in old San Juan. The plants were growing on the branches of the croton and their flower stalks with their flowers on the end where above the hedge. I think they grow like that to attract passing insects.

Daezen, I fed it today and the larger bud is trying to open. It seems to be a burgundy center with greenish white petals striated with burgundy. I'm hoping to get a better view tomorrow, but it seems to be responding favorably!

Atzau, they are the cutest,I'm leaning towards mounting the two little clay pots on a slab of tree fern, then finding another one to make three pots on the slab.

Matt, I had not seen them before. But I wish I could get my hands on at least a couple more. I have plans! I
