Generally new roots do grow from higher and higher on the stem... the older part of the plant will eventually die off and when that happens the higher part needs roots, so roots grow from the stem at a distance behind where the leaves are growing, but it will keep getting higher as the growing point get's higher.
When they grow on trees this suits them well, when we grow them in pots it's not so good. Eventually I find I cut the dead portion off the bottom of plants I've had a long while (actually it will often just easily snap off by that time) this allows the plant to go lower in the pot as the lower leaves drop.
I would make sure the leaves are all above the medium though, and not worry too much about arial roots as others have said.
