A very good Phal breeder swears by tavev's suggestion - in the fall cool them off for flowers the next spring

I definitely disagree on this point. Air roots can absolutely be put into a pot!

Repot this phal, putting the good roots and air roots in the new pot big enough to hold them and twisting them in like a corkscrew so as to break as few as possible. Then give it more light. If you can, put it outside in the shade for the summer and bring it in when the temps get to 45F in the fall. It will love the outdoor eastern humidity.

I've put aerial roots in the pot successfully as well, but other times they've just rotted.

I think it works when it's a really airy mix and you let the mix dry thoroughly between watering. Good advise anyway, but the former aerial roots seems to need that even more than those which have formed in the medium, especially when first transitioned.
