Maxillaria tenuifolia in Trader Joe's!

Just a heads up.

I was out looking for an orchid for my mom, when I saw these guys.

They had 6 of them.

I didn't buy one. I have a one already.

But I've never seen them there before. And they are such an easy orchid, with a great scent and interesting habit.

If you want one, and have a Trader Joe's near you.
Keep an eye out.

That's something new...I'll definitely have to keep my eye out. I couldn't make up my mind about this one until I saw one in bloom...scent is amazing.

So glad you mentioned this...went there this morning and grabbed the last one at my local Trader Joe's. Smells soooo good!

Update from 2015- It is May again and I just bought one of these in TJ's as well! It must be the right time of year for them to be in the stores.

Just like Den nobiles bloom in late winter through spring, so you find many of them this time of year but few or none in the fall.

I just bought one too! (I'm in northern California). Mine had a single very badly damaged flower though. I don't really mind since you just can't beat the $7.99 price!

I might just swing by my local TJ to see if I can snag me one! .... and a bottle of red while I'm at it.

EDIT: Alas, the Orchid Gods have not graced me with their blessing... on the other hand, Dionysus is being quite BFFE.

Are there any special requirements for this plant? I've had one for a while but not flowers...there are new bulbs developing but no buds. Any suggestions?

Isn't it great? I was surprised it was one of the cheaper orchids.

Lots of water, lots of light. My plant is next to my roses in full sun. Watered twice a day in bark.

I put mine on a tree with some sphagnum, is that okay for it? Should I change the watering schedule during winter?
