Thumbs up

I subscribe entirely! Long live the moss! I had an orchid which was stagnating for a year in a terrible state (no roots) then used a version of the sphag and bag method and 2 weeks later it has its first roots!!

I am thrilled because I can not find cyms easily where I live and this one was a bright white one with very small pink dots. Adorable!

Thank you all for your kind help and guidance! I could not have made it without you!

Thank you for this! I just recently got a metric sh*t-ton of mesh/net pots, and I've been itching to use them!

How do Phals do in net pots and moss?

Very well--most of my Phalanopsis are in net pots and potted with sphagnum moss.

I haven't tried growing phals this way but I think it would work very well for them. It is easy to tell when the sphag is dry and netted pots would dry quickly. I grow some of my other orchids this way.

James, I also think that phals fail because people buy them when they go on sale, which is when the roots are mostly shot.

My neighbour moved her phals outside under the overhang of her roof on the north side of her house for the summer. When she showed them to me, they were sitting in a pan of water. She said that way she doesn't have to water them so often. I told her to never let them sit in water.

Actually it depends on how long it has been since they left the GH. If you get them right away they are still in good shape. If they are on clearance it usually means they have been sitting around for awhile. If they haven't been watered too much they may still be in good shape. but if the help has been overzealous......rot.
