Oncidium, paph and epi catt questions! Female
Default Oncidium, paph and epi catt questions!

Hi all thanks in andvance for any info you can give. I mostly grow phal's so excuse my ignorance.

1. I was wondering if an oncidium twinkle stays fairly compact or if they get large?

2. I have one paph and its putting out two new growths. Do they only bloom from new growth ?What happens to the old growth.

3. I found a sweet little bag baby at Lowes. It was an epilaelio catt. It was in bloom so I had to save it. I know nothing about this plant and so far google isnt much help. Are these guys any different from normal catts other than the smaller blooms?

I can't answer your first question because I don't have one. 2. Yes paphs only bloom from new growth. If there are any exceptions I don't know about them. That's true of some other types of orchids also, like Cattleyas. 3. Epilaeliocattleya is a cross between a Cattleya, a Laelia and an Epidendrum. It was probably a Cattleya crossed with a Laelia with the resulting Laeliocattleya crossed again with an Epidendrum. Most people just refer to them as Epicatts. They're usually grown like Cattleyas, giving them bright filtered light and letting them dry out between waterings.

Oncidium Twinkle will stay small.
If you have one that is in bloom or that has flowered in the past, then the size of that growth is the mature size and will not get bigger than that.

With time, it will form a clump, so the width of the entire plant will increase, but not the size of the individual growth.

So are epicatts smaller than regular catts?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "smaller". The rhizome is generally much more compact, meaning you can have a lot of growths in a reasonably sized pot, but they can be on the tall-ish side, with long-ish, cylindrical pbulbs topped by long-ish leaves. But, not so tall as to not fit in most windows, I think . And some may be shorter.

Blooms are generally smaller than many Cattleyas.

My Oncidium twinkle next to a toaster, for scale.

Some varieties of this hybrid are even smaller than mine. Mine has five pbulbs in a two inch pot, with three new pbulbs growing.

I've never seen oncidium twinkle that big!
It might have been mislabeled when it is oncidium tsiku marguerite.

Totally off topic, but your toaster is awesome. Soooo pretty. Of course, the chid is fab too, though!

Entirely possible! The tag says "Oncidium Twinkle" the flowers were tiny, white and fragrant. I'll email the vendor I bought it from and see if a mix up is possible. It's in a 2 inch pot, but the plant is quite tall. Same size as my Oncidium Rosy Sunset.

Thanks! I love that toaster! It was a birthday gift from my mom.
