This orchid of mine has no roots except for the one sticking up but it's not a growing root. It's starting to shrivel, it's not hollow or mushy though. The leaves are wilting and wrinkling. One leaf is yellow but still attached. I really want to try to save it because it's got the prettiest purple and green flower (second pic). Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

You need to cut the spike to about an inch from the base to signal to the plant that it is ready to make new leaves and new roots....
If you don't want to do the bag technique try the vase culture. Look it up in the net, there are some videos on YouTube on how to do the methods.

Where there is green, there is hope! That's a beautiful flower and I agree with Bud's advice above.

I do think it can be saved, but be aware that it will take a long time to recover, a year or two, but it can be done!

Get a small pot, put the phal in it and stuff clean fresh sphagnum moss loosely around it. Loosely. Don't pack it in but just stuff little wads of moss around it. Water with clean tepid water about every few days. Keep it warm and medium light levels. It will throw a new leaf and root in about 4-6 weeks. I have a bunch of phals rescued that way.

Cut off the spike so it doesn't have to waste energy on that. Then I would go with James' advice. Use as tiny a pot as you can, an old yogurt pot/pudding pot can be ideal. If it's too top heavy use a an outer cache pot to help stabalise it.

Thanks for the suggestions! What is the vase method? Is there another name for it? I tried searching YouTube and found a couple videos of orchids with little to no roots being rescued in vases with hydroton. Is that what I should be looking for? Right now my plant is in a small glass with water in it (water is not touching the plant at all, it's suspended above the water) then the glass is on a dish of pebbles that are wet and that whole thing is in a large ziplock on my kitchen counter. This is my first major orchid rescue.

Ok so this thread is old but I have progress to report! After months of thinking there's no hope for this plant I recently noticed a root emerging! Think it can be saved?-imageuploadedbytapatalk1415557126-154588-jpg I've kept the plant suspended above some water in a jar that has been in a ziplock on my kitchen counter since April. Like this. Think it can be saved?-imageuploadedbytapatalk1415557221-328124-jpg I've changed the water a few times but other than that I've just left it alone.
