There is a group of species which in their native environs goes through a somewhat dry dormancy, although not like deciduous Dendrobiums. I have a S. jensichiana which is one of those species. I kept it in my laundry room over the winter where temps got down into the low 40s. One morning there was frost on the inside of a window just inches away from my plant. I cut back the watering to when the sphag started to feel dry but I didn't let it get crunchy. The plant broke dormancy and is going like gangbusters and has started growing 4 new pseudobulbs. It must have liked the treatment. If I recall correctly S. hernandezi is another species in that group, but the others I've forgotten.
