Even if it does recover, it will take several years for it to do so. If you're as new to this hobby as you seem to be, I think it would be in your best interests to toss this plant in the garbage and go get another one.

This time, NO MISTING THE PHAL!

They don't need it.

I think the rot may have happened because water got into the stem (the braided part where the leaves weave together is the stem) and rot set in. Phals are really prone to rot, any standing water on the leaves or the stem can cause rot to set in.

Phals like to dry out a bit. I only water mine every 7 to 10 days, sometimes longer in the winter, when the climate is a bit more humid. I get the best root growth, when I leave my phals alone for a while. I forgot about them for a couple of weeks back in January when life got busy... and I got explosive root growth as a result.

We all kill one or two plants when we're getting started. It's not the end of the world. Hybrids are easily replaced, it's not like you've killed an endangered species here.

Phals are the only orchids that go and die on me. People claim they are easy care, but I do not agree. I can sympathise with the sentimentality of flowers given as gifts.

Orchids are actually easy to take care of especially Phals. The reasons most people kill Phals are either over water/under water, most of the time over watering. The wrong media, the wrong lighting exposure, the wrong pot or mostly the lack of patience and lack of knowledge. Just because an orchid has flowers does not mean it is healthy. Orchids have this type of SOS capability that it will send up a spike to try and produce flowers for cross pollination and maybe a seed pod will be created to carry on the genetic frame of the plant. The important part of Orchids is what is in the pot. Looking at the picture, this orchid was well over watered as you can see by the top roots rotted and the crown collapsed. There is a chance you can save it, I have saved some that were in this situation, just will take a long time. Take the plant out of the pot nd remove all of the media, check the roots, are there any still green/white and hard in nature? If not its to late, no leaves and no roots is to much. If there are roots, get a better plastic pot with alot of holes, bottom and sides, new media, cut out any dead roots and repot it away from any window but not in total darkness. Water it with a growth hormone like KLN every 10 days and just wait.... It is possible.
