Default Rotten Roots?

I've just received two small orchid plants. This is the first one:

The 2nd one shown below seems to have roots and stem in pretty bad shape. I read that I should cut off the dead root tissue but if I did that the plant would have no roots at all! How should I proceed? I'm a total beginner these are my first two orchids.

P.S. Can anyone identify what type of orchids these are?

The second one is definitely a dendrobium. The first, tiny one, I'm not sure, but I think it is also a dendrobium.

As far as the roots on the tiny one go, they look fine to me. Pot it in some bark and give it a good watering, then leave it be until the medium is almost, but not completely dry. Someone with more experience with these large dendrobiums should chime in and give you a hand with how often to water.

The larger one though... I'm not sure. A lot of how you tell if a root is rotted or not, is in how the root feels. It will feel flat, or squishy. Healthy roots feel firm, sort of like a fresh green bean. The color, could be from rot, or it could be from the potting medium the plant was in. So, go ahead and feel up the roots on that second one. If you have a lot of flat roots, you are going to have to cut those back until you get to healthy plant tissue. I see some good roots on this plant though, so it's not a lost cause, but if the root damage is as extensive as it appears, it could take a while for this plant to recover.

Thanks for the response and for identifying the plants.

All the roots feel squishy. And also they are coming apart if i squish them and pull they come right off and there's like a thin twig inside. I don't think there are any healthy roots and I think the picture looks better than it is in real life. All the roots are brown or black, squishy and coming apart.

Is there still a way to rehabilitate this plant if none of the roots are healthy?

Yes. Cut off what is unhealthy, go through the plant one root at a time and only cut the roots that are squishy. Then repot it in to bark mix and follow basic dendrobium culture, since we're not sure what this is, other than a dendrobium.

It will take a couple of years to recover from this kind of damage, but it can recover. It will just require a lot of patience on your part.
