I struggle with ants in my neighborhood all the time. Our area is particularly infested. We always start the year using a bait that worker ants will perceive as food and take to the queen. This kills the colony.

There should be a county extension agent that can provide help with identification and recommendations of effective baits for the particular kind of ant in your bark.
