They're really easy. Grow them on a east facing window sill. Fertilize weakly, weekly. I have mine potted in bark. The tricky part is dealing with them when I get them home. I leave them alone for two weeks. No watering until the medium is bone dry. I do not repot, unless the medium is broken down.
The other trick is a really healthy plant from the start. Lift them out of the pot and check the roots. If you see any sign of rot, pass on the plant. A better one will come along. I always look for signs of new growth when I purchase a mini. phal. New roots or leaves, either is fine by me. As long as you can see that it has been growing for someone else, you should be good.
