There are several that claim to be blue, but they are all like you say, looking lilac or light purple or even dark purple. There are no bright or dark "blue" orchids that I know of. If you see the variatal name "Werkhauserii" that's about as "blue" as it's gonna get.
There are some great floral sprays, used best on white flowers, that you could "doctor" one up for him that's really blue. You just have to make sure you are there the next time it blooms, lol.

Here is a photo of Dendobium gonzalesii I took at Parkside. Folks insisted it wasn't D. victoria-reginae, but it is a pretty intense blue for gonzalesii:

There are plenty of australian terrestrials which qualify as really blue... I suspect difficult to impossible to get, much less grow, however.

Ray that's a beautiful den! I just went to Parkside and it's not listed on their website under either name. Darn it

These are all "blue", but I was thinking middle left.

There are some blue vandas too.
I remember when I was first showed a blue cattleya and I responded with, 'so why does it look purple?'
Good Luck with your mission...just a few days before Christmas.
Happy Growing!
