Hi everyone

Okay, so I'm still new at growing orchids. I have a cattleya that I bought 2 weeks ago. (At least I think it's a cattleya, there was no tag on it.) It was quite dehydrated when I got it. This is my first cattleya so not sure how they grow.
So, my question is, is it normal for them to start developing two pseudobulbs on one stem? There is one on each side of the stem. At least I think they're pseudobulbs.
It was not in bloom when I got it. I'm really hoping I can keep it healthy and am really looking forward to what the flowers will look like.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Yes it is normal for them to do this, however I think the one has stopped probably do to lack of water. It seems to be black.

those are growth 'eyes', and yes, when active they make new psuedobulbs....still too early to tell if they are going to become active....sometimes when a plant is really stressed like you said this one was, they will throw out a spurt of growth, simply to survive...other plants, usually hybrids, will commonly put out two growths off a lead psuedobulb, they make more 'clumping' plants....good luck with yours, don't get too carried away with the water!

Thank you everyone for your responses.
So because the plant was stressed when I got it does that mean that these new developments will not turn into pseudobulbs?
It was packed in moss when I got it. I have repotted it in large bark. I am watering in about once a week when the bark is dry. It is currently sitting about 4 feet from a west window. It does get lots of light. Is this ok? Is there something more that I should be doing? I would really like it to develop healthy new bulbs. I know I'm probably being to impatient.
Any help for this rescue would really be appreciated.
Thank You

most cattleya type orchids will develop one growth eye at a time, and keep the others (normally 3) as backup, in case something happens to the foremost one....don't despair! you will get new psuedobulbs!...I think maybe 4 feet from a window is a bit far, but I don't know your local conditions...maybe you should get a light meter? cattleyas like LOADS of light! your watering sounds about right....good luck!

The 3rd pic has a bud that is growing. The other may grow but when the orchid is in stress it will just push one. When the orchid is healthy and full of stored energy it will push two. I also see a bud on the next oldest back bulb which may push. If you potted it in bark, you can probably water it every 5th day. It depends on what the roots looked like. If there were viable roots then every 5th day but if old roots that are not actively growing then every 7th day would be ok. You don't need to fertilize until the new buds have roots unless the old roots have new ends. Once the roots start growing I would get some kelp supplement and use it once a month. If the old roots are not really growing and healthy I would not give it high light levels as there is not a good enough water transport system to replenish the water loss through transpiration. When the sunlight falls on your hand you should barely feel the warmth. If the roots are in good shape your hand should feel warmth right away.

Thanks James
Yes 4 of the other back bulbs look like they're also developing new bulbs. It's just the lead bulb that looks like it has 2. Do you think the other bulbs will each get a new bulb? Or is it only the lead bulb that will actually develop a new bulb? It does have quite a few good roots although I'm not sure how good they're growing. One of the older back bulbs has a small white nub which I assume is a new root developing. Do you think I should move it closer to the window? It's a west window and can get quite warm.
Thank you for your help.

If the plant is in good health and has grown well during the growing season then yes numerous back bulbs can push growth buds. But usually these stay undeveloped and all the back bulbs push energy and water to the new pbulb. If you cut partway through the rizome between each back bulb the growth buds can develop into new leads. The plant thinks (?) that there has been damage on the lead and so throws energy into the latent bud.
