Potting medium for mini phal Male
Default Potting medium for mini phal

I was wondering what potting medium I should use for a mini phal. I generally use medium to coarse fir bark with charcoal and perlite, but this combination dries out rather unevenly in the small pots of the mini phals. Usually the top half dries within 1-2 days after watering and the bottom half is very moist. I never know when I should water it. The plant seems to suffer when I err on the dry side. I have currently switched to using hydration for my mini phal which should hopefully solve this issue for now.

I would use exactly the same as for a large one. If it's drying unevenly then possibly try and put slits lower down to help it dry.

I plant all of my phals in sphagnum. For some reason they go downhill when planted in bark. I have one now that is recovering from being in bark. 3 months in bark with no new growth, and droopy leaves. 2 weeks in sphagnum and it has 3 new roots and 1 new leaf forming. beats me lol

try the H/S method....it will work and you have no problems with watering.
