NY Orchid Show - So Exciting!!!

I went last year as a surprise anniversary present from my husband. Had a wonderful time!! Took over 370 photos could have taken more! He asked if I wanted to go this year, but I said no, I'd rather spend the money on a couple orchids to buy. But I do still kind of want to go just to shoot them!

We did buy one orchid that was over priced, but it's pretty cool! I was hoping it would be in spike right now but it's not. But where I'm from (train ride north or you) there aren't too many places very local to buy them so I didn't mind spending the extra money. If it's only 1 or 2 don't worry about spending extra. Just remember that they get them whole sale, so it's the NYBG that's making the profit. To help fund the gardens. So don't feel too bad.

The Orchid Show: Key West Contemporary

Magnificent, Elaborate and Vibrant arrangements that fill out the galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory explode with orchids in an amazing array of colors, shapes, sizes, and textures.

I went last weekend and I got myself a mule ear Oncidium and a red Tolumnia. I was very disappointed for I was expecting local Florida orchids for sale and on display.

I am going next weekend to the evening cocktail reception on the large main central conservatory.

I live in the East Village so I took the Metro-North Harlem local line to Botanical Garden Station and walked across Southern Boulevard to the Garden's Mosholu Gate entrance. It took just 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.

Consider too coming down to Philadelphia next month for the SEPOS show April 11-13, which includes a substantial roster of vendors from all over.

I was looking into the Cocktail evenings. That looks fun. And yes, I am taking Metro North in as well. I was reading the directions to get there and it's either get lost trying to find your way or take the Harlem Line.

Philadelphia, huh? I will definitely have to keep that one in mind

We drive in, but wait till the show is towards its end in April... The daffodils, tulips, hellebores and other perennials are in bloom in the flower beds, and it's a nice walk through them on the way to the Conservatory.

Yes, the gift shop is overpriced.... But it's nice to buy an orchid in bloom.

RNCollins we're neighbors!! Last year we were going to take metro-north but silly them you can't stop at the gardens heading south!! You have to do like three train transfers! I personally think they should stop gong that way, the train passes the station! So we drove. Basically if you're on the east side of the river jump on the Taconic which turns into the Bronx river parkway and it's right off of it. Easy driving, and I HATE driving down near the city! In traffic just to keep up with everyone I had to do 80!!! Yikes! I'd much prefer the train! We normally take the Poughkeepsie line, but then we'd have to go to GC and then take the other train north. It'd take twice as long as driving.

All this talk is making me really want to go now!! This year I was thinking about going later to see the rest of the gardens, last year it was VERY windy and about 20*! we walked to the exhibit and back that's it. I'd lave to see the daffodils and other flowers! Does it get more crowded the later in the season you go? Just because I walk with a cane and it gets tricky, plus with shooting the flowers I get in people's way. Last year everyone was soooo nice and gave me plenty of space. But I still feel bad.

This will be my first time going so I am not sure how crowded it is when, but I do know that the Cherry Blossoms are big crowd drawers so you would want to go when they are not in full bloom. Other than that, don't feel bad. You have every right to enjoy the show and I know as NYers we are impatient, but most people who enjoy these shows go for the tranquility not to pick fights so don't sweat it!
