Sad Orchid?
Default Sad Orchid?

Hi all!
I am new to this orchid deal and am very concerned with one of my plants. A photo is attached. Can anyone tell me why the plant's flowers are drooping? It looks so sad and I want to help it! It gets plenty of filtered light, watered only when needed, is in a location that gets some humidity and breezes with good temps and I just gave it some food mixed in it's water today. Help!
Thanks!

Hi

It doesn't seem like the blooms are droopy. What you're seeing is the natural arch of a Phalaenopsis orchid. I see it is staked already. You could put a longer stake in there which would bring the blooms upwards but the natural arch is beautiful...why mess with it

[B][I][COLOR="DarkOrchid"]A couple of them to me look like they are wilting. This is natural. It means the flower is old and the plant is going to get rid of it. Don't worry if some fall off and others don't. It means the buds opened at different times.

If the blossoms have been open for several weeks, and they seem to be getting thinner in texture, it's perfectly normal, as Puddin mentioned.

If, on the other hand, the blossoms are fairly new, droopiness indicates the plant does not have sufficient water to sustain the osmotic pressure necessary to keep them turgid. That can be due to underwatering, or due to the fact that the roots have suffocated (because of old, overly-compact potting medium and/or saturation), have died and cannot take up water.

Default Thank you!

Thank you all so much for your help! The flowers have been open for some time which leads me to believe they are old and simply wilting. What a relief! I appreciate everyone's input. Thanks loads!
