I wonder how much of the price has to do with genetics. Rarity is one thing but the potential to make thousands of clones is a consideration. Even stud fees for pollen?

And sometimes one has to own the Matisse in d'Orsay.

the most I have spent was 114 for a FDK. After Dark 'Black Pearl'. I have always wanted one, and it hurt a little bit to spend that much, but once it arrived... NO REGRETS! it had 40 blooms over three spikes. The smell made me think of the cedar trees back home. That alone was worth it to me. I have had the plant for a month, and it has already became my favorite orchid, and will be a hard one to top.
