$50 each on three orchids last year, they all did very well for me until I moved, lost all three. Very sad, but my new light conditions just couldn't support them. Now I'll stick to the lower light chids. I could see spending up to $100 personally, but I also look and say to myself I could get 3 for that price. But then I think harder and with my health it's easier caring for fewer plants (which is why I'll try not to get over 25 orchids) so yes a nice $100 plant that I really LOVE would be ok, less watering!

Yes, I would dearly like to visit OZ. Being stuck on the Eastcoast, I have had to take advantage of some of their recent Ebay listings.

New to this forum, and mostly new to orchids. At this point I will spend a max of $40 until I learn a whole lot more.

Hi Euplusia, can't find a pic or description of C. violacea; I'd like to see some.
Where can I find it? Even IOSPE says "I don't know"

I spent $45 for a budding Phrag Eric Young for Christmas. It turns out I shouldn't have. The grower got water in the leaf joins and it has been rotting ever since.

Hi sbrofio, here is the link to Troy Meyers laboratory, from where we got three plants. It is a picture of the type specimen.

The same nursery offers Paph Via Pekeruru 'Green Moon' for $2000, and Paph Mem Jack Tonkin 'Marriott Spotted Galaxy' AM/AOS for $3000.
Of course, if a clone grows well, after some years divisions start to become a little more 'reasonable'.

This is why I've stayed away from Paphs in my collection....these Paph folks are a crazy bunch or maybe just a rich bunch. I'll probably eat my words some day as I have recently gotten a couple of them. Anyway, I did pay 85 for an awarded, vintage Cattleya species (division) that I thought I would probably not see offered again. I'm really getting into those vintage Cattleya species for some reason. I secretly and seriously considered 250 for a nice division recently. Not to worry though, I'll be in the poor house long before I'm in the orchid nut house.

I honestly would be terrified to pay some of these prices for one plant. I would be so afraid that something would happen to the plant that I could not really enjoy it

To each their own. And everyone handles their orchids a bit differently.
I think it's rare for a casual hobbyist, or even casual collector, to want a $5000 orchid.

Your absolutely right, it was just a weak attempt at humor on my part. I might want a 5000$ orchid, but not a chance I would ever pay it ......unless, of course, I thought it might somehow produce multiples of that investment down the road. Not for me. I know though, that for some very wealthy collectors that's not a problem and I say more power to them! Get two they're on sale!
