Question A new spike while phal is still blooming?

Hi

I purchased two new phals the other week, they are yellow with pink spotting all over them. When I took off the plastic around them I realized they are both fragrant! Bonus!!

Anyhow I was just taking a look at them and noticed one has new growth coming below a leaf and it definitely does not look like a root. It almost looks like a spike but I am not sure, and it is currently in bloom. Is it normal for a phal to start a new spike while still in bloom?? It has 7 leaves on it the longest around 11". It came in a clear soft pot with one drainage hole, I made some slices on the sides for aid movement. Lots of green roots. I'm thinking maybe this is a basal keiki but I've never had one.

I'll try to attach a pic.

Thanks!

Yes, a new flower spike can start even when a plant is in full bloom. I have one doing that same thing right now. It's perfectly normal although it only happens occasionally.

yours is a new spike.
Do you know the registered names of your plants - per the labels ?

No, funny thing is I got them from Walmart so I expected them to just be noids but I'm beginning to wonder because they didn't have labels and they came in with a shipment from an orchid grower here in BC (Koch).

It's hard to see it in the last pic but the 'spike' has a little growth thingy coming out of it. If it is a spike that'd be a first for me!! I'll try to get a better pic when I get home.
