Default Show n Tell ~ Orchid Addiction Part II ~ Paphs & Phrags

As a Poster Child of Orchid Addiction, I recently posted an overall view of my new schtuff for 2014 (I usually only get serious once a year, right after my birthday, when the orchid vendor sets up booths next to ours during trade shows.) And said I'd put up individuals pictures as time allows.

This year, I'm attempting to branch out into paphs and a few phrags. No, I didn't bloom any of these, but I'm sure gonna.

Here are my challenges:

This one was given to me, and it's darned hard to take a picture of. Label says Phrag Grande Velma's Royal Delight. An overview, plus a couple of closeups.

Then there's this phrag that I got, because I loved the color. And no, my picture shows it no justice. Its label sez Phrag longifolium Black as Night x dalessandroi? (tag was a bit blurry). It had three blooms... one a dog knocked off while it was in transit, one had already wilted by the time I got 'round to taking a picture, and this one is left... a bit wilty, but you get the picture anyway...

This is maybe my favorite, because it smells just.like.raspberries... a LOT. The first picture is just the foliage... the second two are closeups. Impossible for me to get a picture of both at the same time. It's a very tall drink of water. Label is Paph Lynleigh Kooperwitz.

Now in no particular order of pictures, here are two paphs. One is labeled Paph Sioux x Paph Boton (that's the one with freckles). The other I call "Now AnOID" (get it? ) because even with my extremely limited knowledge I figured out someone at the show must have switched around a label. OF course I didn't look at it at the time... I just liked it. Could never get good color in numerous picture attempts.

And last but not least (except in size) is this cutie-patootie "mini" paph. First pic is to show size comparison, and second hopefully you can see the little purple freckling. For a little thing, it has the longest name I've ever seen on a label. It reads just like this: (PAPH. ANG_THONG var. ALBA 'IN CHARM' x NIVEUM var. 'PATHANA' FCC/AOS) x PAPH. NIVEUM 'IN CHARM' BM/TPS

Good Grief!! I call it Lucky Charms

(Phrag longifolium x Phrag dalessandroi) = Phrag Nicholle Tower

(Paph Sioux x Paph Boton). Sioux is good, Boton is not, it should probably be Paph Botan. This cross has not yet been registered.

Finally, the little niveum hybrid = Paph Mystic Isle.

And yes, the complex red is definitely not out of Paph Raisin Pie.

Isn't it? Here is the interesting and fun part... I had about thirty to choose from. Some almost pure white, others with a lot of the freckling. Most had not opened bloom yet and I wanted one with lots of freckles, plus one with a double bloom coming. I got a lesson in how to look at the bud and tell which would likely be more freckled.

Every one was a little bit different. Someone with a lot more knowledge than I would need to tell you why... it has to do with hybrid or grex or something like that, I think. Heck, I don't even know what a grex is... but do read the term quite often.

No, someone else grew them. But yes, it's my plan to grow them from here on out. And have them bloom again. And mostly indoors, yes. My climate isn't suitable for putting outside for more than four or five months of the year.

Thank you for the name on the second phrag. It was illegible.

Yes, it's Botan. That's my poor memory when typing. Should have looked again. I have a couple variety of lotus that are Boton, and got confused.

Paph Mystic Isle = Oooooo, nice naming. I like.

And yeppers, not Raisin Pie, and sure not Supersuk 'Eureka" parentage either.

Thank you very much for the assists. I am trying to learn... just waaaay slow at it.

The Kooperwitz? Yes, my picture doesn't do it justice... and if I could bottle the fragrance I'd be a gazillionaire.

Kooperwitz should be Koopowitz. These can be difficult to rebloom so be patient.

My Lynleigh Koopowitz is in low bud and I'm super excited and worried at the same time.

I have 4 of Mystic Isle. They all have different flowers and leaves. I only like one of them, so time to say bye soon. hahaha

What makes them difficult to rebloom??
They just don't bloom?

I hope mine will bloom regularly.
