Default Mini Phal run amok

I "rescued" this mini phal from my daughter's college dorm room last September. After repotting and watering the plant revived nicely as shown in the first picture, taken back in September. Since then, it has continued to grow but, as you can see, it appears to be growing outward, not upward.

I assume I have several new basal keikis (?) growing but don't see much in the way of new roots. Any advice on how to care for this? Assuming the keikis continue to grow, should I eventually remove them or just leave them and allow them all to grow together? Just hoping something will come of this as it has been fun to watch the leaves sprout all over the place.

Basal Keikis should be left attached. If you try & separate them you run the risk of killing the whole lot. Just leave them be & look forward to multiple spikes.

Thanks Terri. I figured I would leave them since they are so small and tightly arranged. My concern would be whether they would interfere with each other as they grow. Even now you can see how the leaves are intertwined, without much apparent room to grow.

I would leave them also. I have an equestris that has 3 basal keikis. I can't say they are not interfering with the main plant as some of the roots are going through the main steam but I think it would be much harder on the plant to try and take them apart.

When it started to spike the spike was trying to grow back into the steam and so I had to pull it out. Now 2 of the leaves in the middle are turning yellow. It looks kind of funny but the top part of the plant looks fine. I really should get some pictures of it.

No need to worry. The leaves will grow where they want = upwards, sideways or outward, as long as they get enough light....even the leaves underneath the layers get some light any way that they can.
The keikis will adjust to where they are comfortable for placement in the cluster. Unless you see roots develop on the keikis you don't dare cut it from the mother or they die.
You have good instincts....just follow the culture religiously and you will never go wrong.
