Help Please! Newbie
Default Help Please! Newbie

Hi Everyone

Last year my partner brought me an Orchid from the local florist. The bottom part was in a hard plastic pot. They told him that after say 6-8 months to plant it into a proper pot.
Around 6 months the flowers had all gone but the shoots have grown so much the have started to grow upwards (see pics)
I went back to the same florist shop but it was a different florist and she advised me not to replant it.
I am a bit concerned since it is looking like it needs more room but I am just not sure what to do.
If someone could please help me out it would be greatly appreciated

I repot even while in bloom when I bring home new plants to accustom them to my environment and also to check out the status of the roots ( they have a moss ball in the middle of the root mass that causes rot and I just remove it). If you are not comfortable growing in moss then repot it on bark mixture....I usually re use the pot it is in but I clean it well with soap and water.

Those are not shoots, they are ariel roots. These are roots adapted to living outside a pot and taking their moisture from humid air as well a photosynthasising -- turning sunlight into energy. When you do finally re-pot, leave them out of the pot.

Repot it sooner rather than later. The media looks broken down.

I won't recommend what kind of media, everybody has their preferences. I will say I grow my Phals in LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregates-clay balls) from the hydroponics store.

Find a pot with good drainage/lots of holes that just fits the roots. Google repotting videos to see how its done.
