Anancheilium cochleatum (AKA Encyclia cochleata or Prosthechea cochleata), the "cockle shell orchid" is often the one referred to as the "black orchid", but there are others.
What do you mean it's "close" to being a black orchid? It is black!
Aren't those hard to get to bloom? I know the trouble they have with them is that the buds "cook" and perish because they absorb some much light. Or am I thinking of a different plant? It's orchids or roses that this happens.
Ray, have you ever seen this orchid in person? If so, is it really as "black" as it appears in photos? I was a member of the Pacific South judging center where this grex received at least two FCC's. Unfortunately, I had to drop out of judging just prior to Fred bringing these in for judging so all I have seen are pictures. He certainly had a "green thumb" when it cane to the Catasetum alliance.
