In my experience I've found that it's kinda random what discounts they are willing to give on those plants. One time I was able to get a B. Little Stars that was finishing blooming for like 75% off at a Lowe's, but other times trying that has not worked. Hell, I've seen dead Oncidiums on the clearance rack at some Lowe's still priced at $5.00.
These places often have terms from the growers that they have to abide by. It was definitely handled poorly in that situation but sometimes they are legally not permitted to give away any of the plants regardless of their condition.
I was in the local Safeway plant section hoping to leave some orchid show flyers the day of the SEOS show. As the women was telling me no on the flyers she picked up a wild cat with two spikes each holding about 2 flowers folded it 3 time and smashed it into the garbage can. She looked at me and said " sorry, you had to see that". I just put it in perspective, it was a fast food orchid just a one time bloomer to be tossed after blooming.
Sales people that have no brain or no heart. Way to go with the 11$ refund!!! You actually made money on saving the poor thing I imagine a serious case of knee-slapping in the car on the way home.
