I have an oncidium thats just about finished with its flowering stage , one spike has dried up and i cut it off , i am wondering if i should seperate the bulbs evan though they are dried up and finished , should i seperate into a group of 3 , look at pic and see what you think , thanks
If you have room, I would repot them as they are. Each bulb can produce a new plant, and if you have several flower spikes it can be quite impressive and the blooming goes on longer. It is also less traumatic for the plant.
Ok thanks for the reply , I was thinking of going with S/H with this plant once new roots start to emerge , not sure if Oncids like S/H environment though . I did not realize an older bulb can produce a newer growth .
Almost all pbulbs can produce new growth but pbulbs older than two seasons usually don't. First, oncids don't like to have their roots disturbed any more than necessary. They also like to be crowded. Unless there is some issue with the roots or pbulbs, just let the plant dry for a few days, take it out of it's current pot, and repot into a pot one size larger. Place the oldest pbulbs at the edge of the pot so the new growth has the maximum amount of room to grow into. Once there are new roots growing from any new growth, start fertilizing. Oncid roots are very fine and numerous. Rot can easily start under the existing root ball so care must be taken to ensure that it does not stay wet underneath the root ball. I place a rock and some folks place a small net pot under the old root ball and spread it out over that so that the root ball dries out uniformly.
