Found this little fellow in a forgotten window (Help)

Hello!

I'm not really sure this is the right section of the forum, if not please move the thread if thats possible.

I found this little fellow in my mother in laws window the other day (Attached pictures). I believe it's a phal, what kind of phal i can't answer.

This is after i cut off about 10(?) black roting roots, i think those i saved are OK. Or at least working for now. One is grayish brown, don't know about that one.




There is about 5 roots left (Picture) are these ok?



There is brown areas underneath one leaf (Picture)


Beside the negative, i think there is still enough energy in the plant since it's growing a new leaf and what i can see is trying to develop new healthy roots.



I'm really grateful for all the help and tips i can get. Hopefully this phal isn't doomed!

Well, looks dehydrated, but has a few decent roots, so I think with proper care, it's likely to be ok.

I don't know what the brown is, but it doesn't look too worrisome (if other members think otherwise, I defer to them!) - if it's not soggy or spreading.


I moved this to beginner discussion forum - I think this guy is more suffering from over or underwatering.

It will be fine if.....you place it on a bed of small bark, bed of sphagnum moss, or hang it in a glass that has water in it just below the roots but not touching them. Take it out once every few days and water the roots, then place it back in it's bed. It will grow some new foliage and roots in a few months. Keep it warm and give it medium light level.

Thank you! I actually don't have any sphagnum at the moment but hopefully he'll manage until i do!


Should i use any fertilizer or leave it be?

It looks as if it has a sufficient number of viable roots to survive. As WhiteRabbit said, is is severely dehydrated. I would re-pot in a pot that just fits the roots in a mix of your choosing (I use coarse bark and large sponge rock for my Phals). Even though the plant has been severely under-watered, I would avoid keeping it too wet until you see some new roots developing.

I think the brown on the underside of the leaf was just the leaf cells starting to die as a result of the under-watering.
