I let the foster kittens out of their cage this morning. As they were running around one of them decided to go from the cat tree to the orchid shelves. He missed, caught himself on the side of the shelf and started to fall down. Before I could get over there to help him he grabbed my Paph 'Hsinying Alien' by the spike. He pulled it off the shelf and separated a baby fan from the mother plant. I was able to gather everything back together and put both plants back into the same pot.

When I got back from work I was able to repot the baby fan in a much smaller container. The root length total is about 3.5 inches long.

Did I do the right thing with putting the baby into a smaller container? The parent plant looks good and the bloom doesn't appear to have been damaged.

I also included a pic of the naughty kitten (finding out that my hair is fun to play with) and the baby.

Oops! Kittehs and plants don't always do well together! Others will probably have better advice on the baby, but I would have put it in a small pot with smaller bark and maybe a plastic clear cover to help humidity.

Gorgeous kitty! Devilish little look on his face. They can create all sorts of havoc and we love them, still. He looks like a lot of fun!

I have a blue fescue plant that my feral dumped kittens thrashed. It was funny (and sad) to see how they loved to abuse that tuft of grass. It's still hanging on though after one kitten found a home and the other grew up, but it's never regained its former glory!

Cats and orchids are not a winning combination. It took me a couple of weeks of repotting and tying down plants to wire shelves to stop them all being de-potted in their new "digs" outdoors with the neighbourhood cats finding the new forest most intriguing.

czygyny: not so much "rescue kitties" as "fescue kitties"?

I need a 'rim-shot' smilie!

Kitties can't wait to explore new things, like whenever I turn a bit of soil over with a shovel or rototiller, they take it as their own personal new potty.

No, the rim shot I was referring to is when a drum player hits the drums in a certain way to accent the punch line of a standup comedian's joke. Erm, it sort of loses something in the explaining. Here watch below:

I put it into a s/h method and it's on a heat mat for seedlings. The heat mat really helps.
