You probably don't even have to rinse it with alcohol, just wash it like you would if you were going to to drink out of it. I use small plastic juice bottles all the time for small plants...Jean
PS...Be sure you drill holes in them

I use plastic soda bottles, juice bottles, just about whatever plastic container that I can get my hands on- I have found that my orchids are doing so much better this way because I am able to see what is going on in the medium and the roots. I just wash it normally with soap and water and make sure that it has plenty of drainage.

I saw a Youtube video on this and copied it. I used a 2L soft drink bottle and cut it in half in my experiment. Sphagnum moss are placed on the top and bottom layer, and charcoal (drier matter) is in the middle. The sphagnum moss at the bottom layer is just touching the water reservoir. Also I have drilled some small holes around the funnel to improve drainage (from watering) and moisture (from evaporation).
My baby Phal (6 months) has been in the pot for about 3 weeks. So far, I cannot see any downside. Everything looks positive. No rot. No drippy leaves. It is a brilliant idea and I actually spent less time spraying water on it.
Good luck with yours! (or pls share your thoughts on it)

Great Idea. If you put a wick down to the bottom, you could almost have a mini hydroponic

Plastic bottles are of common use in France for salvage ops, S/H, and for me: vanilla cuts rooting.
Just clean them

I use this setup for African Violets in S/H when I first transition them over. Find it helps with the shock value of the transition.
Also, maybe of interest but off topic, if you use this same set-up of bottle and put a bit of sugar water or etc in the bottom, they are great catchers of flies and wasps. Just chuck 'em in the trash once they get yuckified with too many dead bugs.
If I were even greener, I'd rinse and reuse them when used for bug catchers...but just.can't.do.it. The bleech factor is too much for me.
