For the first time, one of my orchids (a dendrobium hybrid) is getting ready to bloom. I've read that is actually beneficial for flower longevity to remove them from bright light (i.e. their normal growing conditions). But I'm curious as to what the limits of this could be?
So, experienced growers, do you move your blooming plants into a more "on display" location? If so, do you think the plant suffered at all? What sort of temperature/humidity changes can a plant being moved like this tolerate while still blooming?
I usually let the buds fully open and then move them to wherever I want to put them in the house. I don't think the temporary move hurts them. On my dining room table they don't get a lot of sunlight, just from the light above. But that's what we grow them for-to enjoy the blooms!
Once the blooms are open or are almost open, moving the plant to a new local in your home won't hurt a thing. The blooms will last longer in a bit cooler non-sunny location -- but that is something I have noticed with pretty much all flower blooms.
I move them too. I have them on a rack just on the other side of the porch veranda where they get enough indirect, bright sunlight to grow. Once thye bloom I want to enjoy them, so I usually transfer them to the patio table I have inside the porch enclosure, where I sometimes have my coffee in the mornings and I can see and smell them if they are fragrant. It's way shadier there, but as has been said they seem to do okay and the flowers look radiant!
I also move my flowering orchids, could be on the dining room table, or somewhere else in the living room where we would enjoy the flowers. They definitely get less light, and maybe less humidity. I have done this for years and have not noticed any adverse effects. They go right back under the lights when they are done blooming.
