Default Vanda Outdoors

Hey everyone!

I just went out and bought a Vanda from Phelps Farm today to put outside under the oak tree in front of my place in Tampa florida. The plant is in a wooden basket right now and I have it hung under a horizontal tree limb. The plant is currently right side up, however I got to thinking about the rain and possible crown rot as this is a monopodial plant. Do you all suggest hanging the vanda upside down to avoid this, or is it not a big deal for vandas? Thanks!

I don't understand. Why do you want to hang it upside down? If you do over time it'll just grow upright again. Is the wood basket filled with anything? If it is just dump the media out. If not you run zero risk of root rot and I would only tip the plant upside down if and only if it rained a lot and night was falling. Otherwise just let the plant grow.

I was basically drawing an analogy to phals, where if water settles in the crown and sits there overnight it could get crown rot. I've heard people say they grow their phals sideways or upside down when grown outdoors for this reason. I wasn't sure if this was an issue with vandas or not.

I have Vandas here on my tree outside in Orlando and that's never a problem. Vandas are pretty well designed to repel water.

I have plenty of Vandas and all are on either stakes or hanging by wire straight up. No problem with water & rot since the strap leaves are different than the phal leaves. If by chance you lose the top by accident not to worry, put some cinnamon on the cut/wound. It should keiki out, I have some of those too.

Ok I see. I read root not crown rot. I'd say if you're having an especially rainy week check them but otherwise these vandas will shed water easily.

Thanks everyone! I will go ahead and leave it as is for now and hopefully it will do well and I will be rewarded with some nice growth and blooms!

I live in South Florida where it can rain every day during the summer and all my vandas are outdoors and upright. They like lots of water and lots of light. Don't hang them where it's too dark. If your vanda is yellow or orange I would suggest bringing it indoors if the temperature is going go below 50 degrees.
