What is my butterwort doing?
Default What is my butterwort doing?

Hi!

My butterwort had drastically changed shape/size since I got it in the summertime. I thought it might be in a dormant stage at first, but it does not match the pictures of butterwort dormancy I've seen. It's not really clear in the pictures, but it's also kind of split itself up in the pot too, so it's "sprouting" from three different points.

It produced 4 blooms in the summertime, and the leaves seem to be healthy and going nuts, but I have no idea if it's supposed to be doing that. I thought butterwort leaves were supposed to lay flat. Any ideas?

The first two pictures are from the summer, the second two are now.

You can divide the plants up into new pots if you want. That is what I usually do. These make fun gifts to give other plant collectors.
I don't have this butterwort exactly so I'm not sure about the other changes. Mine (I currently have three pots of it) haven't changed much from summer and they are still blooming but they don't seem to be catching bugs...that may be due to the lack of bugs, though.

These look like Pinguicula vulgaris to me, at least they are very similar to mine. I live in an area that gets frequent frosts in the winter, and mine live outside year round. The longer, slightly curved leaves are the plant's response to shorter days and a drop in light intensity. I usually see this in Fall right before they begin to go dormant for the winter. If you grow them indoors all year round they don't necessarily need a dormancy, but they will produce very few gemmae without it. I would definitely divide as Leafmite suggested. You should start seeing "normal" leaves as spring gets underway in a few months!
