? How to hang plastic pots inside your home ?

Hi all,

I'll be moving next month and there is a lovely sunroom in the back and I plan to put my orchids there for a while. I have 2 kitties with the munchies so I realized I may have to hang the orchids so they can't disfigure them. Lol

I'll post a pic of a wall of the sun room. It's almost floor to ceiling windows all around and it has heat like the rest of the house, it's not just a porch.

If you have ideas, thank you. If you can post pix of the actual hardware I should get and whatnot, that's even better. I want to keep them in their current plastic pots, no baskets just yet, I'm still learning.
I guess I'll just take them down to water them, let it all drip out and then hang again. It's wood floor in the sunroom. Outdoors isn't an option right now.

Clothing racks - they start at around $20 at Target (I have no idea how much weight they can hold).

Add wire hangers to the pots and you're good to go.

Are you referring to wire hangers that are made for hanging pots with? Or would I be inventing my own? I don't know what's out there already.

PS, i could also just use curtain rods above the windows as the bar to hang on. I see why a movable clothing rack would be helpful, but I don't think it would be work so much for me. Good idea in general tho.

Why not get a couple of shelving units for in front of the windows?

I agree with Jonada. Open shelves will give you room for a lot more orchids and it will be stronger than a curtain rod. If you'd rather go with a rod for hanging, the brackets in this picture are flower pot hangers from Home Depots garden section. The loop on the end is big enough to hold a wooden rod or PVC pipe. They have different lengths. I think this one is 9". You can find pot hangers from online stores like Tindara or Repotme.com. I still think shelves would be more versatile or a combination of a hanging rod on top and shelves below that. By the way, that room is beautiful. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

That looks like a good place for plants. Perhaps do both, some hanging and some on a shelf.

I use a combination of shelves and a clothing rack with two horizontal bars. The clothing rack can hold plenty of weight, surprisingly. To protect the floor, I put down clear, plastic drop cloths (the heavy-duty type) so I don't have to worry when I water. Good luck!

I would rather hang than shelves bc of my kitties....
They would knock them over. They like to sit amongst the foliage you know... Haha
I also don't want it to look too ... Industrial? Idk. When you open the front door to the home, you see straight thru the living room to the back where the sunroom is, so it will be one of the first things you see even if it's not the first room you come to.
I have had a few different "ugly" arrangements in our current appartment. Right now I have two spots for my chids and they are not near windows and have those brooder clap lights hanging from a command hook on the wall. Not very nice looking. They're in rooms that the cats can't access.
This new house has that lovely sun room as well as small bay window in the kitchen and a nice bathtub in the master with some windows that I could open the blinds while we're not home and have some of the orchids recieve natural light in that bathroom.
I only have 14 orchids at the moment, but of course I'll be adding to that
I want to build a small green house one day but... We'll have to replenish our savings account after buying this house. Lol

So they do sell something made to hang pots with? Does it wrap around the pot somehow? I don't have to drill holes right?

There are all kinds of plant hangers around. Or you could whip a few up with some simple macrame.
