I will break out my macro lens tomorrow and post another pic. This is on a mini Phal, so it's hard to tell just by eyeballing it. Bigger phals are so much easier to see stuff on!!
Looks like the votes are split! LOL!

Howdy
Phal roots will usually be torpedo shaped, and it will be from right above the leaf below it.
Phal spikes tend to be "mitten" (Think Lower Michigan) shaped, and directly below the leaf above it.
Roots will come from any side of the stem, while spikes always come from the same plane as the mid-vein of the leaf.
Hope this helps

Based on that description, I think this may be a spike! I'm not at home right now or I would go take more pics. I've seen roots grow on this plant before, and this definitely looks different. They usually start to turn silvery at the base of the root after a week and I haven't seen any signs of this one doing that. Fingers crossed!
So excited! I'm just happy it's growing now. It spent a good month or two doing nothing.

Here are the pics I got with my macro lens for my phone. Some of these are better than others, but I'm hopeful that one of them will have enough detail for someone with a more practiced eye to say for sure if it's a spike or a root.
Don't worry about the wrinkling on the leaf below the, whatever it is. The plant is getting ready to drop it. It's the lowest leaf and it's damaged, so I've been waiting for the plant to cut that one loose for some time.
Thanks for all of your help! This really is fun, trying to figure out what the strange things my orchids do are.
