Does "P." stand for Phalaenopsis or Platanthera? Female
Default Does "P." stand for Phalaenopsis or Platanthera?

I bought a miniature orchid labled P. Sogo Viviens, and it looks like a "moth" phalaenopsis but when I looked up what "P." means on this listing it comes up as Platanthera instead. Is this old and now the P. is interchangable for a Phal, or is my plant a Platanthera after all?

your plant is a Phalaenopsis. Platanthera is a genus of completely different terrestrial orchids belonging to the subfamily Orchidoideae.

Ah, cool I want to make sure I'm calling my babies by their real names (or, their "NoID what-I-Think-They-Are" names) Thanks!

Just so you know... P can stand for any orchid that starts with the letter P :-)

I've had a few different types marked that way. Laziness, or room on the tag, or whatever.

Good that you knew it was a moth orchid!

The moth orchids are my favorite! I'm quite a sucker for the miniatures, 'tho now I'm wishing I had reined in my enthusiasm with buying them at places that didn't have labels more elaborate then "Miniature orchid".
