The mailman came!- with some very cold plants :(?

Hi everyone I am going to post some pics of my new Masd. Maui Gold and Rth. Hunabu Victory. They came in pretty sorry shape due to the cold. I am hoping I can save them. This is my first Masd. I plan to get it going in S/H right now its in spag as they came bare-root for shipping and I didn't have S/H media available. The masd looks in better shape to me then the Catt but I am worried about the dark areas on the lower parts of the cane. the Catt I cut one P.bulb off immediately as it was very obviously gone. I don't like the olive green color it has and don't really hold out a lot of hope for it. I put it in coir/perlite and spag on my seedling mat. with a ziplock bag loosely on top. Ill let the pics speak for themselves. Please give me hope or heartbreak as you please

May I ask where you ordered these from? Some places in Canada don't even ship in the winter because of our cold temps. Hopefully they at least used a heat pack. I would take pics of these and let the seller know immediately. You can possibly get a refund if they die. It's hard to say. The Masdie can likely take the cooler temps than the Catt but the one picture sure looks dark at the base of all the leaves. If the roots on the Catt are alive and firm, then it could grow, but it is pretty small to begin with. I would give it some seaweed to help the roots. I wouldn't put in SH as you will likely lose all roots and there are no new ones to adapt to the SH that I can see.

That Maui Gold is going to be just fine - that is, if you treat it properly going forward! They like cooler temperatures (even ones that tolerate higher temps) and it looks healthy. I don't think you have anything to worry about, at all. The dark areas are normal on many kinds of Masdies.

My personal suggestion is that sphag is the absolute best media for them - especially when put into a porous clay pot. Be aware that if you put it in s/h that's going to be a change for it and all.

I can't speak to the other. Just not my kind of orchid.

Just saw silken posted about the same time as me and I totally agree with the seaweed thing to. I'd use it on the Masdevallia also - I've had some really, really good results on getting nice strong roots on mine using seaweed.

From the fellow in Langley, silken superorchids on ebay. They had a heatpack but it was ice cold. I sent him a email but I think they are gone for christmas as all his listings are down. It was stated in the listing they were guaranteed with the heat pack but they weren't packed in a very effective way. The heat pack and plants were up against the edge of the box rather then in the middle insulated by the packing material. I might keep the masd. in spag until they stabilize at least and play with S/H on something a little more sturdy. I also need to get the masd. in a proper pot as everything i had on hand was too big so its in a temporary container. first thing i did with them was spray the roots with seaweed solution

The catt is in a coir/spag/perlite mix. It was the masd I was considering for S/H but since there in rough shape probably not a good idea. I think some of the roots on the catt will survive so maybe there is hope for it.

You may live in a much warmer part of the country. Here at the moment it is -30C with a -40C wind chill so I think even using a heat pack would be suicide for plants. I just don't order in winter. If you are on the west coast that is much different. I haven't used super orchids but if they guarantee them, you should be OK. I agree its maybe best just to let them settle in and wait until you see new growth before going to SH. Sphag for Masdies would be my choice in a clay pot and I use it for several I have.

Be sure to let the Catt dry out between waterings.

no its very cold here but when i expressed my concerns the seller said they would be fine. I think he thought we all get a Vancouver winter. hopefully he will make good on his guarantee if they don't make it. He had a good rating...

I don't know anything about masdies but I see a lot of green and that is always good. Your catt is small but there looks to be a couple of good roots there. My vote is they will live.

Sadly both of these plants aren't going to make it. Happily the seller is going to make good on his guarantee and replace them for me. With a-lot more care taken as to how they are packed.
