To stop buying pretty NoIDs (unless they're really pretty, or smell great, or I just think they might be more than a simple complex hybrid ) and start spending on some new, fragrant species or simple hybrids I keep saying I'll donate my Phals but they're just too showy in winter, so I won't venture on that resolution :P

A path of resolution...

In 2008, I bought my first few orchids from a semi-local vendor who goes to the same winter trade show we attend. I still have them, other than a phal killed from beginner's lack of knowledge, and a dendrobium.

2009 brought me back to the same vendor, and I attempted another dendrobium, plus added oncidiums.

The year of 2010's goals were to stop killing oncidiums and figure out what I was doing wrong. The one lone dendrobium still looked sickly.

In 2011, I successfully started reblooming oncidiums, and found I was not a good match for dendrobium. Still don't understand them. Maybe a goal for different time once I grow up.

2012 brought me the magic of S/H. It was the perfect solution to my own idiosyncratic nature. I replanted EVERYTHING into it and never looked back.

My 2013 goal was to get my setup inside easier for watering during winter months. Finally, success in the last month of the year, both with orchid setup and aquarium (got on a roll)

For 2014 I want to expand my knowledge by obtaining a few more paphs. Have one I purchased January of '13, and it is now successfully reblooming.

I killed all my paphs. I have one lonely sanderianum in s/h and it has put out a new growth so I guess it will live. I'm going to try filtered water on it and see if that helps at all. I worship all who grow paphs and get them to bloom.

Why? They seem so easy? That scares me. But resolution already made. Isn't one's own particular culture requirements (read "us") a conundrum?

Age showing.... Kinda like the Pogo comic, "we have met the enemy, and he is us." To me, orchids surely seem that way.

And BTW... I use mostly tap water or aquarium water, depending on time and mood. My tap water is GREAT for anything that needs very hard water, or high pH (8.5+).

Now I believe I'm hijacking a very good thread, and will stop.

Excellent demonstration of self-restraint! Unheard of on the interwebs!

I resolve to rearrange my life so that I can spend more time observing and learning about these amazing plants. Any orchid nurseries/laboratories want to hire me?
