Default My Orchid

Hi,

Just new to the board and still reading lots of the posts. So figured I start one, My explanation may not be of great help until I can post a photo for better identification. I have placed a name below which I think is close to what I have.

location Qld Australia - Orchid I believe is a Australian Native. My son works with a tree lopper and he brought this orchid home with a couple of others that were heading for the shedder.

Anyway its on a branch and its stems are about 1.5 - 1.8 metres long and is in flower at the moment with one stem having three 450mm long stems having flowers all over them. The other stem has only one flower group.

I have noticed two seed pods one on each flower group. I have not noticed any new stems forming at its base so am a bit concerned I have it in the wrong place and I don't want to loose it.

Now I have tried to search for the orchid and I feel this is the closest if not the one.

Durabaculum undulatum var. undulatum (syn Dendrobium discolor)

The orchid may not be everyone's cup of tea however I think its pretty cool and I would like to look after it as best as I can. So a quick learning curve is required.

As for the seed pods I cannot see me flasking if that's the correct term, for a host of reasons. So may have to find someone who maybe interested in doing this orchid.

Any thoughts / comments on the orchid.

Brian

I think if you copy and paste this - Durabaculum undulatum var. undulatum (syn Dendrobium discolor)into Google or what ever you use, it will show the orchid.

Very cool!

I'm not at all familiar with this one, but from IOSPE PHOTOS
Quote:
The largest of the Australian Dendrobium, it has 3 varieties with 1 being extremely variable in size and color, with few to numerous, cylindrical stems that are leafy in the upper two thirds and carries distichous, ovate to elliptic, leathery, obtuse leaves a year round bloomer, with the maximum occuring in the spring on an axillary, arched, to 2' [to 60 cm] long, densely 10 to 80, fragrant flowered raceme arising from the upper portion of an old cane as the new growth arises, which is found in Queensland Australia and New Guinea and grows warm to hot as an epiphyte, as well as a lithophyte, directly on the coast in mangroves or behind dunes, where they can have salt spray as well as on cliffs and rock faces up to an altitude of 550 meters. They receive ample water from spring until autumn and then need a distinct dryer rest if in pots and some mistings if mounted with exposed roots, but in either case never allow the plant to dry out completely. This plant if not blooming needs more light. In nature it always grows in exposed high light conditions.
I hope there may be some members who grow this who can chime in!

Hi,

Thank you very much for that info. I had a gut feeling it was in the wrong spot in my pergola. I will address this when the flowers begin to fade.

As for the seed pods I will try and find someone to sort these out and hopefully grab a few for myself.

It is my understanding this orchid comes from north Qld in Australia so is not a common orchid in Brisbane Qld.

I mentioned in my earlier post there were no new shoots, well I found one today, damn excited about that to say the least.

Anyway looking forward to where this orchids goes in the next few years.
