Default Oncidium spike questions.

My spikes have begun to turn brown and blast....2 months down the tubes....

But I have noticed that farther down the spike there are new bud limbs coming out.

Is this normal?

Does it have a name? Is it Oncidium or an intergeneric hybrid? Many get branched spikes.

Yes, those branch (profusely, I believe - Twinkles have never done very well with me)

I don't know why you may have lost the upper part of the spikes ... I would think environmental issues or too much water maybe ? I think I always over-watered mine - it seems they maybe like to get drier than other Oncidiums I have grown ...

Others may have some other ideas ...

Interesting this started about 2 weeks ago.

They were actually really close to blooming like within days and then dead....and browning canes.

I just got one from Larrys in october. It is ready to bud as well. One spike is ready, the second spike is still forming. I put all of them in very cold wind for a few days. I also water them more because they are flowering. My miltonia buds are also bloating and coloring, they should pop ona week. I think putting them outside for a while it is chilly (as low a temp as they can stand) will lead to buds also not being stingy on water while buds are forming, nutrients (i got some kelp and superthrive) and more than usual sun. As it is winter all orchids but phals are under one flurescent grow light and open window light. I amnot saying this is the best formula but as i have been reading, it is what makes the most sense.

I keep my Pink Twinkle near a cool window and it seen to do better with it being cool, I haven't lost any bud this time, the last time it sent up a spike it never made it to full bloom before they dried up and fell off, I'm hoping to see blooms in a few weeks.

Perhaps that is it and also that it can be left a little dryer. I have always left mine way to dry, I know, I know if the leaves are wrinkly well dah stupid! But for some reason I thought they were suppose to dry out between watering.

My house is always mostly on the cool side at least at night, it can get hot during the day when the sun is shinning in the windows. Mine is about to pop and I WILL be posting pictures. Funny thing is it has always bloomed for me even thought I have tried to torture it. I have had this poor thing for years and it blooms every year even thought it has not had enough water. Mine is in and east window where it gets morning sun but also bright all day long.

Don't feel too bad, I just had a spike on one of my dens blast. I moved it from one room to another so my fault most likely.
