Well, I have a strategy--sort of.....
I do buy what I like, and try to leave room for in impulse purchase here and there. Sometimes you find something and it's just too gorgeous to pass up (grin).....I also have a "wish list" of things I'd like to try that I'm either waiting to find or waiting for the price to come down (my list is a lot shorter since Andy's Cyber Monday sale, lol).
When I look at orchids, I first look at whether it it likely to grow in my conditions. The second consideration is bloom and fragrance (and if it's not fragrant I probably won't get it). The third consideration is space--where will I put it???? Of course, since I discovered grow lights and am no longer limited to windowsills that's not as much of an issue....
I think the thing to remember is that for most of us this is a hobby and it should be something we enjoy. With that in mind, buy plants that you like and that will grow for you without making you either rip your hair out or go grey from the stress.
