Collecting strategies

I only grow four kinds of orchids (mostly) - paphs, phrags, masdies, and psychopsis. I know what they all need. Space is by biggest issue because I already have so many... but nothing a little re-arranging can't help, when needed.

I have a list of what I already have and also a list of what I want. I keep this on my computer but it sync's to my phone so I can see it when I'm out at a shop/nursery. I've told all my 'regular' places what I'm looking for and they call/email/text if something comes in they know I might want.

I have learned that if I see something and I want it, I probably shouldn't wait as it may be gone the next time I blink. Once or twice I *did* try the come back tomorrow idea, and was successful, but I've also had some great plants slip through my hands. There have been a couple times where I have seen a plant and been convinced I will never see one like it again (like my Dollgoldi) so I went for it without thinking further.

I am very fortunate to have a lot of grow space that offers many conditions for my orchids. I have a solarium that gets sun most of the day and since it's heated even my catts and vandas remain happy in the winter.

My strategy is I have a running list. If I like a plant that isn't on my list, I look up the cultural info. and many pictures of the plant before I purchase it. I find that I like purchasing in person much better then buying online, as I've never been disappointed with a purchase I made in person.

I usually fall in love with a particular group of orchids, and then get this overwhelming need to collect all in that group.
Ex:
Masdevallia of subgenus Regalia.
Dendrobiums of section Oxyglossum
Phalaenopsis of subgenus Parishianae, Phalaenopsis, Aphyllae, and section Ambionensis

I mostly collect fragrant orchids. I only have a few that are not fragrant. I usually buy seedlings as it is rather fun to watch them grow and very exciting when they finally bloom after many years.

I have to look at what type of growing the conditions they need because made that mistake in the beginning and purchased cool growing high humidity orchids...whoops...

Plus I have found the more plants you buy the more you realize what you like and don't like. Like I have a paphs... I have since realized I really don't care for them...

I always get a chuckle on how much some of us are so much the same, and yet so different.

I feel that way when I *don't* buy paphs!

Already have one, and actually in all fairness I don't like the flower. Maybe you should try another! Thanks though.
