Found a nursery with orchids. Think they may have lost their minds
Well after my complaining that there is nobody in my area that sells orchids that I can get them from..well found one yesterday. Never EVER will I go back there. Oy that place had little oncidium twinkles in bloom and they wanted 30.00 for them!!
I got my two twinkles in double spike for 9.00 and they looked a heck of a lot better than those did. It seemed that no matter how small or how big they were the basic price was 30.00 and up.
The plants were in plain pots, nothing fancy they were not like exquisitely hard to find. Just your average oncidiums/phalanopsis's/miltonias etc. They were pretty I will say that but not 30.00 and up kind of price range yeesh!! I was so excited to find an actual nursery that had orchids. well that went up in flames...

May have to stick with online sellers. B/C even 20 dollar shipping is better than paying 30 for a 5 dollar plant.

That's pretty common pricing. I mean if they have something you can't live without it is worth buying then and there because if you order a plant from Kawamoto (or similar) you'll probably end up paying $30-40 (if you're buying just one).
But you might want to frequent the nursery regardless just in case they mark down the post-blooming plants. I have scored like mad this way. I've gotten some sweet things for $5 and $10.

They are 2.5 hours away. Plus I really was not impressed with their plants looks. Again my twinkles looked better than theirs. Even after being wrapped up and sent to me in 3 day mail. lol.

Ah, yeah 2.5 hours is a bit much for a "meh!" selection.

I am suspecting you are not too *Unhappy* with online buying. I seem to remember you dancing the happy dance after getting those 6 oncidiums on ebay recently, so I am guessing you are on the look out for the great deal (as I always am). I'm pretty much in your situation. Do I really want to spend 30 dollars on gas to go to an orchid green house, or spend 10 dollars shipping. Well, money wise it really depends what all is going on in your life. If I happen to go to a big city for another reason, I may look up an orchid nursery, but I am pretty used to spending 15 dollars or less for orchids. I would go to 30 if it was a huge good looking mature plant with a proven track record. By the way, I have what might be a cool plant on the way from ShermanTP. It looked ginormous and was $12.00. In the spring, I will keep checking for a huge value like you got-- yes, I was jealous-- just a bit.

What was it. Yeah well I had way cooler intergenetic oncids then they did. By a long shot. Yeah I was dancing until they got fried/tiny tornado got them all messed up. But they are bouncing back. My evergreen whic was the same size as theirs that was in spime 4 bulbs. Was only 12.00 plus the 5 for 12 and 8 dollar shipping. Pfft. Still cheaper. Lol

Prices vary a lot from one nursery to another, especially if the nursery doesn't actually specialize in orchids. We have a grocery store that occasionally gets orchids other than phals, and my neighbour waits until they get mark down and gets one for me when she buys one for herself. The twinkles started off at $10 which is a bargain. They are really nice ones with 2 to 3 spikes. I bought a fantastic yellow one. My neighbour bough me a white one for just a couple of dollars when the blooming was done.

I don't buy orchids from nurseries unless they are dedicated to orchids. Even at the New York Botanical Gardens, when they do the annual orchid show, they sell some orchids at the gift shop. Way over priced. Everything is $30.00 and over, almost nothing has a proper name to it beyond genus. If I want a NOID hybrid, I will just go to Trader Joes. Much cheaper.

You guy's find much better deals than I ever have. Not that I have checked that much but lets face it not to many places around me selling orchids. I have yet to find them marked down, maybe just going at the wrong time don't know.
They have them at the green house I like to go get my garden plants but I haven't seen them marked down, although I rarely go in the winter. Maybe I should check them out they get them from Fantasy Orchids out of Denver. They are that much or more. And no I haven't bought one yet and I don't think I will.
