oncidium planted in soil?
Default oncidium planted in soil?

I had a little retail therapy today and picked myself up an oncidium hybrid ( NOID) I was thrilled to see something besides phals around. The plant I picked up is planted in soil which immediately sets off little alarm bells in my head. Should these be in something more orchid friendly? With the blooms on it I think repotting will be a nightmare but should I attempt it anyways? The soil is very wet atm.

oncidium planted in soil? Male
Default

It's called Promix. It's perfectly safe for most orchids. Many commercial nurseries use it because it's light-weight, easily available and less expensive than other mixes and it allows them to water less often due to its moisture retention properties.

It may not be suited to your growing conditions if you are heavy handed with watering or if you're the type (like me) that prefers to have all my plants more or less in the same mix, so that everything can be on the same watering schedule. If that's the case, then repot once the plant is done blooming and is starting to develop new roots.
