Oh man I almost know how you feel. I was watering the other day and my phal that has gotten long but not quite blooming I was hitting it on the cabinets and the window. I was just lucky enough that I didn't break it. I am going to have to be very careful or I will be in your shoes.
But I very much like the getting another one idea....good one.

Very sorry to hear, but this happens to all of us, some 2 months ago I killed 3 - buds on mu Cattleya luteola, 2 spikes on Catasetuum and spike on Oncidium, all at the same time with spraying orange guard to protect plants from ants, I was beyond upset, 3 orchids just about to open the blooms, all gone:-( What can we do, just go on!

Sorry to here about the spike. I did that to my white phal too and still remember the pain. Happy to hear you plan to get a new one!

Everyone has done it. I broke off an entire new growth once. The plant has yet to produce another.

Sorry for your loss. I've done that kind of thing many times. Once I bought a cattleya seedling and didn't even know what the flower would look like. It took three years to get to blooming size and finally got a couple buds on it. I decided to try and stake the buds before they opened and broke them off. So I had to wait another year to finally see what the flowers looked. Actually they turned out to be nice.

I had a tiny tornado come flying through and broke a 1 inch growth off of my frilly doris catasetum yesterday. So I know the feeling!

OMG! Kindrag23, I was just going to tell you that I broke off both of my new Catasetum's spikes!!! I was picking it up to water it and it toppled to the right, breaking off the spike, and then when I tried to stabilize it - it fell to the left and broke off the other spike! It didn't know whether to cry or laugh!
The plant should have been repotted ages ago by the grower. It came to me root bound and top heavy but I've been too afraid to mess with it until after the dormant period. Well, this is my reward! lol!

Echoing another member, very sorry to hear this but it does look like there are some buds growing in the background so...not a total loss.
But more importantly, is this not just the nicest group of people you have ever met?!!

Twinkles were within eye sight and he did not even bump them it looks like!!! Or my b little star which has 3 spikes as wel...guess I should be happy he did not get them...but still I wonder...
