Not sure where to put this. This one is making me crazy tho.

At our local society meeting last week, they asked us to try to find information on a hybrid called Cattleya Sweet Briar. One of the OS members has a cattleya sweet briar x laelia anceps. He's had the plant for something like 30 years and it's just beautiful, but he has no history on Cattleya Sweet Briar.

They've checked Orchid Wiz and found nothing. I sent off an email to an OS in Florida, when I found a reference to this cross on their website, and they suspected that this is a cross that probably didn't get registered, which makes sense, but does that mean that we've hit a dead end in identifying the parentage for Cattleya Sweet Briar?

Is there any other way that I could track down more info on this hybrid that I'm missing?

Thanks!

I was interested to see what the orchid looked like. Instead of finding a bloom picture I found someone asking the same question (wanting to find the family tree for sweet briar) back in 2009 here on OB.

Yeah, I found that too. I think that was a member of our OS, the one that asked us to search for info because I recall him mentioning that he'd asked here several years ago. The OS in FL got back to me with the name of a grower who may have this cross. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and see if they have anymore info on it. Fingers crossed!

The C. Sweet Briar x Laelia anceps is beautiful. I'll see if I have a pic on my phone. I took several pics at that meeting. It was a very large plant and the spike had to be three or four feet tall.

Edited to add:

Nope, I didn't get a pic of it. I did get a pic of the 2 gallon bucket he was growing it in, but that's it.

Crap.. nevermind. The orchid grower went out of business in 2006.

Aw, too bad. Some of these older hybrids are quite rare now in cultivation so it can be quite difficult to find out anything. Hopefully, though, you will find someone who might know.

You might try emailing Gubler Orchids up in the southwest desert here in California. They go way back. Karen Gubler is still active.

Thanks! I hadn't considered doing something like that!

Just an update. I did contact Gubler Orchids. They had no luck finding anything on Cattleya Sweet Briar in their records.

Still waiting to hear back if the OS managed to track down anything through Florida.
